With its name and style attributed to Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys in the 1930s, the sound of bluegrass is somewhat specific and hasn’t evolved like country and some of its other subgenres. Taking inspiration from Scottish, Irish, English and eventually African American styles, it grew out of tradition the Appalachian region of the United States and mostly utilizes string instruments. It was originally used as accompaniment for dancing, and its mixture of Celtic sounds and Southern gospel music has proved a lasting influence to this day.

Compared to country, a much wider genre, bluegrass is differentiated by its generally acoustic nature, more complex chord changes and stronger roots in jazz and blues. Compared to “old-time” music, which many may confuse with bluegrass, the melody is frequently passed between the different instruments instead of being restricted to one lead instrument. This once again points to the influence of jazz. Compared to most folk music, bluegrass has a higher timbre and is more open for instrumental solos.More info here: Bluegrass Blues Banjo Tab and Jam Track Now Available for Download at…

There are many online ticket brokers and websites that feature the sale of bluegrass concerts. Let’s take a look and narrow our searches to some of the most user-friendly and easiest spots to find bluegrass concerts on the web. American bluegrass has become and integral part of the music landscape in the United States and around the world. Each year there are hundreds of different bluegrass music festivals all over the world and gaining access to these concerts should be a smooth and relatively easy process. The first step in the process is to research the kinds of bluegrass festivals you would like to go to. Then, select the ones that appeal to your liking by determining the distance you are willing to travel and the amount of money you would like to spend. Next, you can purchase tickets through online retailers or by visiting the homepage of the festival’s website. That is the best method of bringing live bluegrass entertainment into your life. The best part, of course, will be going to the concert and meeting all the new people and seeing all the live bands in the course of one amazing and unforgettable time. You thought this was good?

Bluegrass music has come out of the hollows and hit the suburbs in the last decade. One of the most popular artists during that time has been Alison Krauss. Her music crosses genres and appeals to fans of pop, folk and country. It hasn’t mattered whether she’s been singing bluegrass with Union Station on their album “Paper Airplane” or singing duets with Robert Plant on their platinum seller “Raising Sand,” people want to hear her. Her pure, high vocals are good for any type of music and any singing partner. Her broad appeal has brought many new fans to bluegrass, and increased visibility for the entire genre.

Another of the most popular bluegrass artists of the decade who, like Alison, was featured on the soundtrack of “O Brother Where Art Thou” is Ralph Stanley. He isn’t a new face on the scene. Those of us who grew up around bluegrass have been hearing Ralph Stanley since the 1950s. He performed for many years with his brother Carter and the Clinch Mountain Boys, and continued to perform after Carter’s death. His performance of “O Death” on the soundtrack won a Grammy and helped create a whole new generation of traditional bluegrass fans.

Gone are the days when a bluegrass fan had to be sure to take enough money to a performance to buy a record at the venue after the show. While that was a great way to get an autograph, it was a hard way to build up your bluegrass collection. The easiest way is to buy online.

Book store chains can be a great source for bluegrass music. A quick check of one recently showed over 3,000 selections available online. You can have what you want shipped to your home or pick it up at your local store. Selections range from Smithsonian recordings to the newest bands. Many of the selections can also be purchased used through used book and music dealers. Nowadays the major music downloading sites all have bluegrass selections available. At least one site has over 4,000 selections available online for downloading into your MP3 player. In addition, many of the artists now have their own websites. Fans can purchase music and memorabilia directly from the artist if they prefer.

There are also a variety of online sites that stream bluegrass music. Most of the sites have links to artists and new recordings. In short, the easiest way to buy or order bluegrass music is to do it online.

Arcadia Fall Mountain Music Festival: This one’s in Missouri so if you don’t live in the south it’s an easier trip. Expect tons of bluegrass acts and all your favorite fall eats – it’s a great place to take the family and make a weekend out of it!
MagnoliaFest: How about a Florida festival? You can camp by the river then hit this one up and it’s an easy transition as it’s Americana music rather than pure bluegrass. There’ll be food and fun and you can hit up the beach when you’re done!
Georgia Fiddler’s Convention: there’s nothing more inherent to bluegrass than impressive fiddling and at the Georgia Fall Fair you’re going to see the best of the best compete. There’s great southern food and games for the kids so make it a weekend.

To truly learn about bluegrass music, you have to go where bluegrass was born. You have to go into the hills of Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia. You need to explore the small communities built up around coal and timber. Music is all about place and people. To understand the high lonesome sound you need to hear the wind whistling down the pines while sipping on a little homemade.
Bluegrass was born from the Old Time music of the Scotch, Irish, and English immigrants. When they settled in the Appalachian Mountains they brought their music with them. The isolated and rugged nature allowed of the landscape allowed the music to remain largely free of outside interference as it developed. Bluegrass departed from Old Time in that rather than all instruments playing the melody in Bluegrass each instrument takes the lead at times with other instruments playing the accompaniment. This is known as a breakdown. Bluegrass also incorporated the Banjo which at the time was unknown in old time music. It was introduced by black blues musicians.
One cannot discuss Bluegrass Music without mentioning Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys. In fact, the Blue Grass Boys did not get their name because they played Blue Grass. Bluegrass is named Bluegrass because of the Blue Grass Boys. The Blue Grass Boys are almost solely responsible for the spread of blue grass. Several members of the band went on to start their own bands and thus a genre was born. Some notable members are: Earl Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers, Lester Flatt, Peter Rowan, and Ricky Skaggs.
Bluegrass has grown and changed over the years and features a history as rich as the land that gave it birth. What’s 1 more click?

With the recent rise in popularity of bluegrass music, a number of informative websites have appeared online that provide up to date news, artist profiles and tour dates. Here are two great websites that will aid in your immersion into the wide world of bluegrass music.

The Bluegrass Blog (http://www.thebluegrassblog.com)

Founded by John Lawless and Brance Gillihan, The Bluegrass Blog has been the leading resource for information on bluegrass artists since 2005. The blog itself features a wide variety of articles ranging from artist profiles, videos of live performances and industry news.I was looking for more information and found it here. The defining feature of The Bluegrass Blog is its member forum. Known as “The B”, the forum allows visitors to interact with each other regarding their favorite bluegrass topics and has become a valuable tool for independent bluegrass artists in promoting their music.

Cybergrass (http://www.cybergrass.com)

Cybergrass creator Bob Cherry is credited for starting the first online resource for bluegrass music in 1992. Since those early days of the internet, his site has become one of the most trusted bluegrass sites available. First time visitors should check out Cybergrass’ Top Ten feature which showcases articles such as “Ripping Your Vinyl LP Albums To CDs or MP3s” and tips on finding the best outlets to stream bluegrass radio.

When it comes to finding the best bluegrass music online, there are some simple tips to follow to expand your musical palate when it comes to good ol’ bluegrass. Of course, the radio might be the greatest resource, but it can be hard to come by a bluegrass station on your average AM/FM.

The easiest route is to establish if there is a particular artist or song in the bluegrass genre that you like. With that, find a music recommendation service that you can easily navigate, and create a custom station based on your artist or song. Most services are free, and allow you to indicate what you like or dislike, further forming the custom station.

Another route to take is to read up on the artists you already enjoy – even artists who are not necessarily bluegrass! I recently read that Taylor Swift was recommending the progressive bluegrass duo The Civil Wars. Of course you are more likely to hear bluegrass artists discuss other bluegrass artists, but it just goes to show you’d be surprised by the musical taste of others.

The final route isn’t free – satellite radio. There is a cost, sure, but you’ll find a station if not multiple stations dedicated to the genre, expanding your bluegrass horizons!

Bluegrass music is one of the strongest roots of American music. Bluegrass music itself is considered a sub-genre of country music and showcases an amalgam of western European and African influences. The birthplace of bluegrass music is most commonly situated in the Appalachian mountains were English, Scottish, and Welsh immigrants settled in the late 19th century. The music was intended to properly accompany different styles of dancing that were popular with the mountain folk during their time of recreation.

Bluegrass utilizes a myriad of different types of instruments in its arrangements that include: the banjo, fiddle, guitar, and voice. The guitar is most commonly used as a rhythm instrument while a banjo or fiddle takes the lead role in most songs. Traditional bluegrass music was centered around folk songs that told a story of love, despair, death, or celebration. Bluegrass music was intended to be a simple progression of chords accompanied by identifiable lyrics that could be easily followed by even the most amateur musician.

Since its inception Bluegrass music has evolved into a multifaceted sub-genre that has footholds in many different markets, and anytime a person hears those delicate tones plucked from a banjo he can not help but be reminded of its humble mountain beginnings.
